The community of Black River is located on the Lake Huron shore at the mouth of Black River in northeastern Alcona County. A community park and boat launch are located at the mouth of the river for boating and fishing enthusiasts. Negwegon State Park is located on the north edge of town offers several miles of beautiful beaches and hiking trails. The settlement was named from the stream flowing through it into Lake Huron. A fishing station, first occupied by William Cullings in 1849. Settled by French trappers and fishermen, it is still French. Seat of the lumbering operations of Alger, Smith & Company (A. A. Alger, M. S. Smith), 1876-1880 (then the largest pine timber producers in the world). It is now a fishing village again. Edgar O. Cheney became its first postmaster on February 9, 1877, the spelling was changed to Black river on May 16, 1894, and then back to Black River in 1958. Black River is an unincorporated community in the township, about 25 miles south of Alpena on Lake Huron at the mouth of the Black River. It is just south of the Negwegon State Park. The elevation is 590 feet above sea level. Black River has an excellent park and boat launch, which give access to fishing, including perch, salmon and trout.
